Why more installers are specifying microinverters
String inverters remain the dominant choice for straightforward residential solar, and for good reason. But the proportion of Australian installs using microinverters has grown steadily, and Enphase is the reason. Their IQ8 series has changed the conversation around what a microinverter can offer, particularly on complex rooftops, shading-affected sites, and where customers want the most resilient setup available.
The core argument for microinverters has always been panel-level independence: if one panel underperforms, it does not drag down the rest of the system. The IQ8 extended that case considerably by adding grid-forming capability, branded Sunlight Backup, which means the system can generate power during a grid outage without a battery, provided there is daylight. The feature is built into each microinverter rather than requiring a separate unit.
The 25-year warranty
All IQ8 microinverters activated in Australia from 1 October 2024 ship with a 25-year limited warranty as standard, the longest standard residential inverter warranty in the Australian market. The launch coincided with the Australian release of the IQ8X model, designed for high-efficiency panels with DC input up to 505 W and support for 96-cell and 80 or 88 half-cut module configurations.
That warranty matters for a practical reason: most solar panels also carry 25-year performance warranties. Previously, customers could have a 25-year panel guarantee sitting on top of a shorter inverter warranty, which creates an obvious coverage gap. The IQ8's warranty closes it.
The IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase
Enphase launched the IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase in Australia in August 2025. The most significant feature for Australian installers is three-phase backup capability: previous Enphase batteries were single-phase only, which limited their application in the growing number of homes and newer builds running three-phase power. The FlexPhase version supports both single-phase and three-phase installations with configurable power output, described by Enphase as the first AC-coupled three-phase backup solution in the Australian residential market.
Each 5 kWh unit includes six embedded IQ8 microinverters and delivers continuous power of up to 3.84 kVA in single-phase configuration. Units can be stacked to reach 70 kWh, and the system is eligible under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The battery carries a 15-year warranty covering up to 6,000 cycles.
One honest consideration for customers: at 5 kWh per unit, the Enphase battery is smaller than most competing products by default. Customers wanting 10 kWh or more will need multiple units, which adds cost and wall space, and it is worth being upfront about that when comparing options.
IQ7 and IQ8 compatibility
A practical question for installers with existing IQ7 customers was addressed in early 2026, when Enphase released software enabling IQ7 and IQ8 microinverters to run in the same system under a single IQ System Controller 3 INT or IQ Gateway. This allows existing IQ7 customers to add capacity or add compatible battery storage without replacing their entire system.
What's coming next
Enphase has indicated the next battery for the Australian market will be the R5, expected in the second half of 2026. Specifications and pricing have not been formally announced. The R5 is understood to be smaller than the 5P FlexPhase, which would directly address the size and wall-space feedback the current battery has received.
Who is the IQ8 best suited for
The straightforward answer: complex rooftops, sites with shading, customers who want panel-level monitoring and fault isolation, and anyone asking for the longest available inverter warranty. The premium over a quality string inverter is real. On simple, unshaded rooftops, that premium is harder to justify on performance grounds alone. On anything more complicated, the case is strong.
